South African twin terror suspects by US blacklists

The US has placed South African twins Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie on its terrorist blacklist for allegedly plotting a series of attacks against its Pretoria Embassy and unspecified Jewish facilities.

The twins were allegedly acting on behalf of the Islamic State terrorist group.

“Among other consequences, all of Tony-Lee Thulsie and Brandon-Lee Thulsie’s property and interests in property subject to US jurisdiction are blocked, and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them,” read the US State Department statement.

Jewish facilities

The Thulsie twins were first arrested in South Africa in July 2016.

Apart from allegedly conspiring to bomb the US embassy in Pretoria and Jewish facilities, the two are also accused of planning to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group.

The State Department said that because of the threat they pose to US security, the twins had since been named “Specially Designated Global Terrorists”.

The crime

Muslims account for 1.5 per cent of South Africa’s 53 million people. The country has so far been spared the jihadist attacks that have struck several other countries on the continent.

Meanwhile, the trial against the Thulsie twins resumes on October 20 at the South Gauteng High Court.

The Thulsie twins were arrested in July 2016 and have been charged with conspiracy and incitement to commit the crime of terrorism and conspiring and attempting to commit acts associated with terrorist activities.
